What’s important?

This painting is nearly complete, another few hours will get it there. What I loved? – painting the yellow stripes. What I didn’t like? – painting the red stripes. Different to other paintings in that the viewpoint is from above, up the steps that once led to Busters nightclub, now fenced off. The tarmac was a great challenge, I initially painted it too dark. “Not a seller!!” someone has said – but that isn’t why I paint. If I only painted what I knew people would buy, I would not enjoy it and I’m sure the pleasure would soon subside. I’m inspired by unusual places, mess, chipboard, graffiti, cracked glass, concrete, brick, reflections, hidden overlooked beauty. I like those things because I know I’m drawn to them all of the time.

It is surely the most important rule of all creativity: never create work with the sole reason of selling it.
